As Tax Day approaches, it's time to shine a light on the real culprits responsible for the huge disinvestment from our public infrastructure, education, and services in recent decades. The truth is that large corporations and the ultra-wealthy have been systematically defunding our communities for decades, and it's time to hold them accountable.

It's no secret that dozens of large corporations with massive profits pay zero in federal taxes, while hundreds if not thousands more paid significantly less than the federally mandated tax rates they were supposed to. This rampant tax evasion has cost our communities trillions of dollars, leaving schools underfunded, childcare and university costs soaring, roads unrepaired, and mental health programs struggling under massive caseloads, among countless other examples.

This crisis did not happen by accident. America’s wealthy and the politicians who do their bidding have had an outsized voice in the decisions that affect all of us. They’ve demanded tax breaks (and avoided paying the taxes they owe) for decades. As a result, the elected officials who do their bidding drive down taxes for the wealthy while making cuts to vital services, including education. Meanwhile, private contractors siphon taxpayer dollars away from our children's K-12 education while raking in soaring profits and maintaining segregated schools. At the same time, parents are paying the equivalent of a home mortgage for child care and college students are graduating with crushing student debt.
